About me

Hi, I’m Josipa Tomac, a young aspiring graphic designer who loves creating cool and meaningful designs. I was born in Sisak, but I was raised 25 to 30 minutes away from Sisak, in small village called Potok. I can say that I’m really blessed because I’ve had a chance to grow up in such a small, but beautiful peaceful place with my family.

My story

Throughout elementary school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, and when someone asked me “What are you going to do after school?” or “Which high school are you going to attend?” I never had an answer. But when elementary school came to an end, I knew I had to enroll for something. So in year 2021 I enrolled in the Sisak Vocational School/Strukovna škola Sisak, majoring in web design.

Web design was a newly introduced major at the time, which meant that I was the first generation of web designers in Sisak. At first, I didn’t like web design and the idea of working on a computer because I didn’t even go to IT in elementary school, so I didn’t have any prior knowledge of computers. But I told myself: “If I’m going to spend 4 years here, let’s do it right and actually learn something.” And so it was. I worked really hard and constantly learned, and in the process of “actually learning something,” I fell in love with graphic design and web design and became one of the best in my generation.

I even loved coding and programming, which we learned in the Web Projects course, and it’s the only course that lasts all 4 years. I do not regret getting into web design at all, I’m really blessed because I found something I’m good at and acually love doing.

Skills

Graphic design

All skills I got are from my time spent in high school in Strukovna škola Sisak as web designer. Adobe Ilustrator is my favorite program to use, because I enjoyed designing logos and making poster designs. We haven’t used Adobe InDesign much, we used it for making calendars, portfolios, the book of graphic standards and layout for magazine cover and pages. Same with Adobe Photoshop, we used it mostly as a tool to change a resolution of the photos or ilustrations for the book cover and the inside of the book.

Web design

Knowledge for using programing languages such as HTML and CSS, I got on the only one subject that we had trough all 4 years of high school, WEB PROJEKTI/WEB PROJECTS. Here we learned how to make websites using code. I personally really loved this subject because I learned something that I never thought one day I would.

On 4th year of high school, we were more focused on Java Script coding on subject called Programiranje/Programming. We had only a little amount of time to learn just basic of coding with JavaScript since we had it only 2 hours a week.

Video editing

Video editing was focus only one year of studying web design on subject called WEB SADRŽAJI/WEB CONTENTS where we used editing software for videos Open Shot. Since this subject was only one year, we only had time to make two projects. One of the projects was to make our own short film. That was really fun experience for me and I really enjoyed editing it. I was the one who edited the film, but also had the most of the l scenes where I had to memorize all the lines.

We also did some audio editing using the program Audacity for the same subject. It was all in 3rd year of web design. Since this was the same subject we also had time to make only two projects. One was to make a soundtrack for a movie and I really liked that. The other was to choose a song and take just the instrumental of that song and cut out a speech by a Croatian politician who we also had to choose and make it sound like they were singing. It was really overwhelming and took a lot of time to listen to the same speeches again, but it was worth it.
